The origins of the city

We find traces in prehistoric times, but high in the Vaucluse mountains. By the 6th century, the population settled in the swamps ... The stilt houses were built.

In 1274, the city became the property of the Holy See in the grip of the Popes of Avignon in the Comtat Venessain.
Then to 17 / 18th century the wool industry takes its rights and works thanks to the famous waterwheels.



Industrial development

The nineteenth century was the century of economic expansion, urban development. This is the installation of new factories, intensive and systematic exploitation of the water ... because its strength and multiple channels used for many factories ... Flour, plasters (wheel Caisse d'Epargne) but mainly mills wool and silk (the silk arrived at the Isle about 2 centuries before arriving in Lyon!).


The Sorgue

The driving force of the river develop the wool industries have on the city but also promote the development of fisheries. There's even a neighborhood in the city, the "fishermen quarter" bringing Street Names like the street of the otter, eel, ...


L'Isle sur la Sorgue today

With its proximity to the Luberon and Mont Ventoux, its neighboring municipalities (Country of sorgues), its natural and historical identity (rich heritage) and its many activities, the city's economy lies mainly in tourism (several hundreds of accommodation tourism, more than 80 restaurants, a multitude of leisure ...). Here life is certainly a bed of roses ... The sun, our land and our river generate for generations of men and women with the sweetness of life is like and shared throughout the year.
